the finished product

Well, here is the final product from Cookie Day '09 - we are messy, exhausted, sick of cookies/frosting/baking, but still smiling somehow!  And, sadly, there were actually 3 more kinds of cookies that didn't fit on the table so didn't make the pic!

vindication!

According to the ladies I work with, the Fudge Fail '09 was totally NOT my fault - apparently fudge won't set if there is any moisture in the air, and of course it has been raining nonstop here! So i am gonna have to try again next week! :)

baking fail.

As of this weekend, I am officially retiring from baking. as my mom kindly just pointed out, "Maybe desserts aren't really your thing." Thanks mom.

It started out innocently enough - I really wanted to make some fudge yesterday on my day off. I had all the ingredients, and I have been known to follow a recipe pretty well. So I make the fudge, it tastes good, i set it aside to set up. 4 hours later - fudge soup. 8 hours later - still pretty darn mushy. i figure i'll throw it in the fridge overnight? nope, still mush. freezer? hard for about 4 minutes until it warms up above 40 degrees, then immediately softens. boo. so now we have some pretty tasty/incredibly rich hot fudge sauce type concoction that can only be eaten with a spoon!

then, tonight, Pia and I went to our buddy Michelle's house for some gingerbread house building. i will start out by fully admitting and embracing that i have ZERO artistic/creative bones in my body. but witness the outcome of my efforts:

Pretty cute, right? it's standing, decorated, fairly ghetto.

But here is what happened on the ride home:

Of course, sabotage cannot be totally ruled out, as Pia was in charge of safeguarding the houses on the way home - hers magically made it without any problems while mine "accidentally" collapsed. sure P.

Cookies!!!

It was Cookie Day again at Bethany's house! I wasn't able to go last year (thanks to Mother Nature crapping about 7 feet of snow on Spokane), so was super excited to be there this year for a MARATHON baking sesh with my fave girls Bethany and Michele!

7+ hours later, we had dozens and dozens of yummy cookies... And i was exhausted! But not quite as tired as newly-preggers Bethany! :)

Here are the girls looking gorgeous, and also some pics of a few of the many cookies we made (i believe we ended up with approx 12 kinds of cookies/bars that i can think of off the top of my head), and the adorable apron Bethany got me for xmas (SO CUTE):

Saint Lavs

I am officially convinced that my mother MUST be a saint (or, at the very least, has a spot saved in heaven just waiting for her)!!!
i called her this evening on the phone, only to be met with the sound of a recorder being played - and trust me, there is NO mistaking the sound of a recorder. i, of course, asked her about it... apparently Liam was practicing his "Hot Cross Buns." Over and over and over, from the sounds of the 5-minute phone call we had. she wasn't complaining, or discouraging him, or making fun even. trust me, this alone should qualify one for sainthood!!! :) such a good gramma lowie.

better late than never...

last week, pia, mom and i went to see "the lion king"! and it was incredible. possibly my favorite musical of all time (and that's saying a lot, cuz i LOVE musicals)!

and, shockingly, i actually remembered my camera - this is the only pic i got though. i am the queen of self-pics, and really have it down to an art form at this point i think. :)

way too blessed...

Happy Thanksgiving all! SO much to be thankful for this year, it's difficult to know where to begin...

A few things that come to mind:

~My beautiful, funny, wonderful family. I feel so lucky to count my siblings as 3 of my best friends. And am so thankful to my parents for raising us, loving us, and so much more!

~For a secure job and a roof over my head!

~For having owned some of the greatest dogs known to man - Murphles, Walt, Lois and especially Gooser who is finally in a place where she can run wild and free! :)

~For wonderful friends who love me, support me, make me laugh nonstop.

I hope everyone has as much if not more that they can be thankful for this year!!! Scary to think Christmas is just around the road...

wahoo!

It's my favorite time of year - Zags Basketball! Hurray! We aren't (yet) ranked this season, but have had some good showing so far... So we are hopeful for a great year! (And the fact that we only have 2 Seniors and 1 Junior helps!)
Go Zags!

Bear Longinotti, 1995-2009

She was a soft-spoken lady in her old age, other than at walk time when she would go nuts. She HATED to be brushed. Which meant she occasionally suffered through a terrible shave job to get rid of mats (and subsequently was known as Nala due to the Lion King-like hairdo). She suffered in silence (mostly) when first Murphy and later Walt and Lola came to live in HER world, but she was always, always the boss. She was the cutest effing puppy I have ever seen in my entire life. All fluffy white fur and love. She loved going to Tony's soccer games when she was a pup, and would always try to chase the balls around wanting to be one of the gang. She, of course, LOVED the snow and was so fun to play with - always trying to catch snowballs and run around.

Love you Goosy Girl.

And sorry for the crap pictures of our baby girl, I'll find some more later.

Take that, Haters!

Well, it only took 3 1/2 months since moving in, but my room is finally clean (the giant pile of clothes in the middle is all the stuff i didn't need for everyday wear, and hadn't yet put somewhere)... :O

another amazing website.

Check out this guy - he makes fun of kids' drawings. Love it.

Here's an example:

His comments: "You spelled America wrong asshole. Also, I could have sworn America's colors were red, white and blue. There's no yellow anywhere, traitor. F"

watch out Seattle!

Pia and I are off to Seattle to watch the 'Hawks take on the Detroit Lions (who are 1-6 to our 2-5, so we MAY stand a chance)!

SO effing excited! and i promise i'll bring a camera this time...

After a lovely 4-day visit, dad and Cara are officially on their way back to VA. :( It was super fun getting to see them back in good ole' Spokane - we did lots of visiting, catching up with all the grandparents, pumpkin carving, a bit of shopping, and i even drug them to a concert! (well, Cara was excited at least...)

Don't be strangers, you two! (Or Pooh and Gummy either...) LOVE ya!

i rock at life.

this is the pumpkin i carved... not bad for my relatively little skill. mind you, i got the image off google, but still...

i also free-handed a "puking" pumpkin for the Parlange gang, which looked pretty sweet too.

Happy Halloween

San Diego zoo pics

As further proof that I am terrible at documenting events, here are the only pictures I took of my 6 days in San Diego...

Sara and I decided to go to the Zoo! It was a fun, sunny day, perfect for wandering around.

Here is the only pic of the 2 of us... I am horribly squinty-eyed here and look awful. But Skoky looks adorable! :)

The lions were sleeping. Not sure why i took this pic, since all i can see is his balls. oh well.

baby giraffes. cuteness.

we seriously stood at the elephant exhibit for about 20 minutes, cuz right when we got there they started giving baths and it was adorable.

my fave animal of the day! the panda's apparently spend about 18 hours/day sleeping, and they do it in the trees! freaking precious, i loved this guy. the zoo actually has a new baby panda, but he won't be out on display until December. boo. don't they know we pay good money to see these animals?

flamingos. kinda creep me out, actually.

turtles. obviously. i don't know why i uploaded this terrible picture to post, but i'm too lazy to erase it. enjoy.

Slacker!

I am probably the worst picture-downloader ever. As proof, here are some pics from the week I spent out at Camp (yes, that was waaayyyy back in August)!

This is Greg braiding my hair. Apparently the first braid he'd ever done. It turned out surprisingly good - not good enough to leave in and wear around, but still...

Katie K, Nic, Danielle and I all dressed up (the building behind us is The Arc, where campers have been writing their names for many a generation - my name appears no less than 6 times. You are only supposed to write it once. Whatever.)

Papparazzi for the dance...

Best cabin-mate ever! Danielle and I first shared a cabin when I was a fifth-grader and she was going into fourth! Lots of history in these walls... ;)

me and Ellen! we decided to dress like cowboys that day. For no reason whatsoever...

Michaela - showing how much fun it is to cook for 60+ people...

thank you Lavs!

For introducing me to my new favorite website of all time, Regretsy! I love it so so much, mainly because the person who writes the comments on this crap is even snarkier than I could ever dream of being... See example below.

"Look, I’m a vampire! What? Wait let me lower the glass a little bit. Okay now look! What? Okay how about now? No? Try putting your head on the table and looking up at me. See? It’s like I’m drinking blood. Because I have fangs. No, on the glass. No, those are etched in the glass so it looks like I . . . oh fuck it."

costumes, anyone?

Here are some pretty awesome Halloween costume ideas... brought to you courtesy of wtfcostumes.com!

nothing says "class" like a pregnant nun - which, actually, I heard one of Pia's pregnant friends is dressing up as...
Any true "Office" fan will want to go as bobblehead Dwight. Although, personally, I am partial to "3-hole punch Jim."

And, possibly my all-time favorite costume (for so many reasons): The homemade Midget costume! Love.

repeat... get over it.

i put this cartoon up waaayyyy back in the early days of the blog. but i have nothing else. and my inner ear itches right now. and i HATE it. and the snorking sound drives Pia nuts (which is actually kinda funny in an annoying-little-sister way)...

san diego

Just checked into the hotel for nursing conference and am killing time before dinner (see the view from our room)! Had a lovely weekend with Sara, just mostly relaxed and caught up on eachother's lives which was great and much needed! I took a couple of pics from our trip to the SD Zoo today, so will post those once i get home... :)

ps, i totally brought the bad weather with me - it was in the 80's here all last week, and as soon as i landed the clouds and wind came out and haven't gone away! oh well, still sunnier/warmer than Spokane...

I'll be going to visit my BFF Sara for the weekend and then attending an Oncology Nursing conference for the rest of the week...
And I will bring my camera this time, so maybe i'll come back with pics... Maybe.
Also, I'll throw out a HUGE congrats and best wishes to cousin Pete who is getting married (wow!) this weekend! I'm sad i'll miss what is sure to be a great party!!! xoxoxoxo

fun with friends

This weekend I was able to travel to good ole' Walla Walla with my bud Michaela (left) to visit our friend Danielle (center)! It was soooo much fun, I haven't been to Wally World in years and years. I have been friends with these girls since 5th grade when we shared a cabin at Camp Cross! Nice to know that some friendships don't die no matter how much time goes between visits, and some people never change... Personality-wise, I think all 3 of us are pretty much exactly who we were as 9 year-olds. :)

Also, it was so great to wander around the old stomping grounds at Whitman... man I loved that campus so much, it is just so gorgeous! Lots of new fancy buildings (Cara, Sherman is no longer a weird wooden fortress, but all shiny and new!) but pretty much exactly the same.
